Virtual Assistant Organization
If you are considering a career as a virtual assistant, are looking for work or are already employed as one, you may want to join a virtual assistant organization. There are many of these organizations around the world which help protect the interests of assistants, promote their services and provide credibility. Some organizations have membership fees while others are free to join. You can find a wide variety of organizations online which you will want to research before deciding which to join.
The IVAA or International Virtual Assistants Association is a nonprofit organization that helps educate virtual assistants, help them develop work skills and provide them with a credible association to put on their resume. When an employer hires an assistant who is a member of the IVAA they know they are getting someone who is upheld to certain criteria because there are requirements for membership. There is also an online organization called VA Networking which is a large networking and support site for virtual assistant professionals.
The first step when seeking such an organization is to go online and look around. You will find small organizations, large ones and many in between. Some will charge membership fees while some are free to join. If you're not ready to join an organization but want to learn more about being a virtual assistant and talk to other assistants you can find a group or message board devoted to the subject. Sometimes you can find job listings on these groups and forums and learn valuable information you can use on the job.
One thing you should know is that your experience and skills count more on your resume than any virtual assistant organization. So you should make sure you are properly educated and trained before joining such an organization. From there you can choose an organization based on what it offers you and what you are looking for. Many of these groups can provide advocacy, information and support for professionals who want to build careers in the virtual assistant field. With a little research you can separate the less credible organizations from the ones that are worth joining. Before joining a paid or free association, do your research and make sure they are credible and legitimate.
