Personal Assistant Duties

Whether you are looking for a personal assistant to hire or want to start a career as a personal assistant, you will need to understand personal assistant duties. A personal assistant is an individual who manages various duties and tasks that their employer chooses not to do or does not have time to do. The responsibilities of a personal assistant may be answering telephone calls, scheduling appointments, sending and sorting mail, running errands, shopping, arranging travel plans, accompanying employers on trips and more. There are certain duties that personal assistants should not be asked to do and this includes childcare, cooking and cleaning. For these tasks an employer should hire a nanny, cook and housekeeper. Personal assistants are not servants or slaves and cannot do everything themselves. Issues like duties and responsibilities should be outlined in a legally binding contract signed by both parties.

If you are seeking work as a personal assistant you should consider working with a placement agency. They can help you build your resume and place you in temporary or permanent jobs based on your skills and what you are looking for. They can explain more about the personal assistant lifestyle and what you can expect. They can also explain your salary in regards to each job, although you should know these agencies also make money when they place you in a job. This is why some personal assistants open their own businesses or go freelance while others work with agencies.

Although personal assistant duties vary depending on the needs of the employer they should be quite similar to those described above. If you are going for interviews you may want to explain to your prospective employer what you can do and what you cannot do. Or, you may want to ask them what their expectations are. Then you can decide whether or not you are able to meet or exceed those expectations. While a personal assistant job can be glamorous, it can also be hard work.
