Their duties may include managing the household, running errands, taking care of business matters, shopping and much more. Basically whatever your boss asks you to do, you do. Your duties will be varied however you will need experience in running a household and multitasking. The average salary for a personal assistant is $40,000 and up depending on various factors so as you can see this can be a lucrative profession.
Once you've decided that a personal assistant job is right for you, the next step is to start your own business or register with an agency who places personal assistants in jobs. To start your own business you will need to get a business license, fill out all applicable tax papers and register with both the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. If you want to be placed with an agency you will need to find one who handles this type of work and schedule an appointment. They will look over your resume, evaluate your skills, see what work is available and go from there. You may be placed on a waiting list for jobs if there are no jobs currently available.
Some personal assistant jobs may be short term. These are ideal for building your resume and sharpening your skills. The more successful jobs you get under your belt and the more good references you acquire the more in demand you will become. Eventually you can work your way up to a high salary with a wealthy client. One thing to watch out for is employer abuse. Not to say personal assistants get abused, but some are overworked and underpaid. Never allow your employer to treat you with disrespect or unfairly as this should never be part of your job description.
When learning how to become a personal assistant your attitude matters just as much as your skills. You should be friendly, polite and have a smile on your face. You should project a confident demeanor and a professional appearance. As you adjust to your first job after awhile you can relax a bit and show more of your real personality but at first you should definitely be in full on professional mode. Some personal assistants do develop friendships with their employers but this is a complicated issue to be considered on a case-by-case basis at your best discretion.
